Florida runs four scholarship programmes that families call “ESA”. Here’s the plain-English version, so you can work out which one fits your family.
FES-EO
Family Empowerment Scholarship — Educational Options
Universal eligibility for Florida students attending an approved private school. Awards are roughly equivalent to the per-pupil state allocation and follow the child to their school of choice.
FES-UA
Family Empowerment Scholarship — Unique Abilities
For students aged 3–22 with qualifying disabilities. Highly flexible — funds can be used on therapies, curriculum, tutoring and approved learning materials. Awards can reach up to around $34,000 per year.
PEP · Personalized Education Program
The homeschool option (most relevant for our families)
Designed for Florida homeschool families. Awards are around $8,000 per year per child and can be spent on approved curriculum, lessons and educational materials. This is the programme most Mysteries in Time families ask us about.
Florida Tax Credit Scholarship (FTC)
Income-based private school option
A long-running scholarship for students from lower-income households attending a participating private school. Often used alongside FES-EO depending on family circumstances.
How families actually spend the money: All four programmes are managed through Step Up for Students or the AAA Scholarship Foundation. Once you’re funded, you spend through portals like MyScholarShop or via direct purchasing options — which is exactly where Florida-approved curriculum providers like Mysteries in Time need to live.
