Geography Facts!

🌍 Where Is the Nile River?

The Nile River is a very long river that flows through eastern Africa. It is formed from two main rivers: the White Nile and the Blue Nile. The Blue Nile begins at Lake Tana in Ethiopia, and the White Nile flows from Lake Victoria in East Africa. These two rivers meet in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. From there, the Nile flows north through Sudan and then through Egypt. In northern Egypt, it spreads out into a wide delta with many smaller channels before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. At over 6,600 kilometres long, the Nile is sometimes described as the longest river in the world.

Ancient Civilisation!

🌱 Why Was the Nile River Important?

The Nile River is still very important to Egypt today, and it was especially important to the people of Ancient Egypt. In ancient times, most of Egypt was dry desert. The land along the river and its wide delta in the north were some of the only places where people could live, because the river provided fresh water and rich soil for growing crops. Because of this, the Egyptians built their main cities and famous pyramids close to the river. Important places such as Luxor, Memphis, and Cairo grew along its banks. Later, when the Greek conquest of Egypt took place, the Greeks founded a new capital city called Alexandria at the mouth of the river in the far north of the country.

🌾 Harvest Time!

🌾 The Nile River and Farming in Ancient Egypt

The people of Ancient Egypt depended heavily on the Nile River for their food. Each year, the river flooded its banks. When the water went down, it left behind rich, dark soil that was perfect for growing crops such as wheat and barley. The Egyptians believed that the flooding was connected to their gods. To help make sure the floods were strong enough to water their fields, they made offerings to Osiris, who they believed watched over the Nile and its life-giving waters.
