Secret Code!

📝 What Are Hieroglyphs?

Hieroglyphs were the writing system used in Ancient Egypt, developed around 3200 BC — that is over 5,000 years ago! The word comes from Greek and means "sacred carving" because they were often carved into temple walls and tombs.

Unlike our alphabet with just 26 letters, the Ancient Egyptians used over 1,000 different symbols! These symbols, called hieroglyphs, were pictures that represented sounds, words, or ideas. They could be written left to right, right to left, or even top to bottom — imagine reading a book from top to bottom!

Ancient Stories!

🏛️ Hieroglyphs on Tombs and Temples

The Ancient Egyptians believed that writing was magical. They carved hieroglyphs on the walls of burial tombs to help the dead in the afterlife. These writings included spells, prayers, and instructions for the journey to the next world.

Pharaohs and important people had their entire life stories written in hieroglyphs on their tombs. The walls were covered with colorful pictures showing their achievements, their family, and offerings to the gods. Even the ceilings had stars painted on them to guide the spirits!

Amazing Discovery!

🗿 The Rosetta Stone Discovery

For hundreds of years, nobody could read hieroglyphs. The secret of how to understand these ancient symbols was lost to time — until an amazing discovery in 1799 changed everything!

Napoleon's armies were exploring Egypt when they found a large, broken stone slab near the town of Rosetta (called Rashid in Arabic). This stone had the same message carved in three different scripts: hieroglyphics at the top, Demotic (a later Egyptian script) in the middle, and Ancient Greek at the bottom.

Scholars could already read Ancient Greek, so they used it like a key to unlock the mystery! It took over 20 years, but finally, a French scholar named Jean-François Champollion cracked the code in 1822. He realized that hieroglyphs were not just pictures — they represented sounds too!

📍Today, you can see the Rosetta Stone at the British Museum in London — it is one of the most visited objects in the world!
