📅When It All Began

When Did the War Start?

World War 2 was a huge global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It involved many countries around the world and was the largest conflict in history. The war began when Adolf Hitler, the leader of Germany, invaded Poland on 1st September 1939. Two days later, on 3rd September, Britain and France declared war on Germany.

⚔️The Two Sides

Who Fought in the War?

Two main groups of countries fought in the war. The Allies included countries such as United Kingdom, United States and Soviet Union. They were fighting against the Axis powers, which included Germany, Italy and Japan. The fighting took place across Europe, Africa and Asia, as well as on the oceans and in the air.

Key Moments

Major Events of the War

World War 2 lasted 6 long years, from 1939 to 1945. During this time, many important battles and tragic events took place. Cities were bombed, soldiers fought on land and sea, and millions of people were affected.

The Battle of Britain (1940)

Germany tried to invade Britain by air. For months, British pilots fought bravely against German bombers in the skies above England. Winston Churchill called these pilots "The Few" because there were so few of them compared to the enemy, yet they saved Britain from invasion.

Pearl Harbour (1941)

On 7th December 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This brought the United States into the war, which was a turning point for the Allies.

D-Day (1944)

On 6th June 1944, thousands of Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy in France. This massive invasion, codenamed Operation Overlord, was the beginning of the end for Germany as the Allies pushed into occupied Europe.

The Holocaust

One of the worst outcomes of World War 2 was the Holocaust, when millions of Jewish people and others were persecuted and killed by the Nazis after being forced to live in horrific conditions in concentration camps.

🏳️Victory & Peace

How the War Ended

The war finally ended in 1945 when Nazi Germany was defeated in Europe and Japan surrendered after atomic bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. World War II changed the world in many ways and helped shape the international organisations and alliances that exist today.

🌍 The World Changed Forever

World War 2 changed the world in many ways. The United Nations was created to help prevent future wars. The map of Europe was redrawn. Many countries gained independence from empires. And the world entered a new era called the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. The war taught humanity important lessons about peace, cooperation, and the terrible cost of conflict.
