🌍The Largest War in History!✈️
πŸ“…When It All Began

When Did the War Start?

World War 2 began on 1st September 1939 when Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland. Britain and France had promised to protect Poland, so two days later, on 3rd September 1939, they declared war on Germany. This is the day most people remember as the start of the war.

However, some historians argue that the war really began earlier. Japan had already been fighting in China since 1937, and Italy had invaded Ethiopia in 1935. But the invasion of Poland is when most of the world's strongest countries became involved, which is why we remember September 1939 as the beginning.

βš”οΈThe Two Sides

Who Fought in the War?

The countries involved in World War 2 were divided into two main groups, called the Allies and the Axis Powers. These alliances were like two giant teams fighting against each other across the world.

🀝 The Allies

  • β€’Britain (including the British Empire)
  • β€’France
  • β€’Soviet Union (Russia)
  • β€’United States (joined in 1941)
  • β€’China

βš”οΈ The Axis Powers

  • β€’Germany (led by Adolf Hitler)
  • β€’Italy (led by Benito Mussolini)
  • β€’Japan (led by Emperor Hirohito)

⚑Key Moments

Major Events of the War

World War 2 lasted six long years, from 1939 to 1945. During this time, many important events changed the course of history. Here are some of the biggest moments that shaped the war:

πŸ›‘οΈ The Battle of Britain (1940)

Germany tried to invade Britain by air. For months, British pilots fought bravely against German bombers in the skies above England. Winston Churchill called these pilots "The Few" because there were so few of them compared to the enemy, yet they saved Britain from invasion.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Pearl Harbor (1941)

On 7th December 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This brought the United States into the war, which was a turning point for the Allies.

πŸ–οΈ D-Day (1944)

On 6th June 1944, thousands of Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy in France. This massive invasion, codenamed Operation Overlord, was the beginning of the end for Germany as the Allies pushed into occupied Europe.

🏳️Victory & Peace

How the War Ended

By 1945, the Axis powers were losing. The Allies had pushed German forces back across Europe, and the Soviet Union was closing in on Berlin from the east. In the Pacific, American forces were island-hopping closer to Japan.

Germany surrendered on 8th May 1945 β€” a day we now celebrate as VE Day (Victory in Europe Day). Adolf Hitler had taken his own life in his bunker just days before. In Britain, people danced in the streets, held street parties, and celebrated the end of six terrible years of war.

However, the war wasn't completely over. Japan continued fighting in the Pacific until August 1945, when the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These were the first and only nuclear weapons ever used in warfare. Japan surrendered on 15th August 1945 β€” known as VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day).

🌍 The World Changed Forever

World War 2 changed the world in many ways. The United Nations was created to help prevent future wars. The map of Europe was redrawn. Many countries gained independence from empires. And the world entered a new era called the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. The war taught humanity important lessons about peace, cooperation, and the terrible cost of conflict.
