The Gold Rush for Kids

Discovering Treasure in the American Frontier

California 1848!

⛏️ The Gold Rush for Kids

The Gold Rush was one of the most important events in the history of the Wild West. It began in 1848, when gold was discovered at a sawmill in California.

Forty-Niners!

⛏️ Prospectors and Gold Panning

When the news spread, thousands of people travelled west hoping to find gold and become rich. These hopeful miners were called prospectors. In 1849, so many people arrived that they became known as the "Forty-Niners."

Prospectors searched rivers and streams for gold using a method called gold panning. They filled a pan with sand and water and gently shook it so the lighter material washed away, leaving heavy pieces of gold behind. Some miners later dug deep mines into hills and mountains to search for larger gold deposits.

Growing Towns!

The sudden arrival of so many people caused towns to grow quickly. These towns, known as boomtowns, often had shops, hotels and entertainment for miners. However, life in these towns could be rough and crowded.
