Queen Victoria ruled the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for an incredibly long time, from 1837 to 1901. Her reign lasted 63 years and seven months, making her the longest-serving British monarch at that time. The period when she ruled is known as the Victorian Era.
Victoria was born in 1819 and became queen when she was just 18 years old after the death of her uncle, King William IV. She married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1840, and they had nine children together.
Many of their children later married into royal families across Europe. Because of this, Queen Victoria became known as the “Grandmother of Europe.” She is also an important ancestor of today's British royal family, including King Charles III.
This was a very important time in British history because Britain became extremely powerful around the world. The country had a very strong navy, and its empire spread across many parts of the globe.
British territories stretched from Canada in the west, across large areas of Africa, including Egypt and South Africa, and all the way east to Australia and New Zealand.
The most important part of the British Empire was the British Raj, which included the lands we now know as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Queen Victoria was given the title Empress of India.
During the Victorian Era, Britain also became a major economic power. The country produced huge amounts of goods and traded with many parts of the world.
Queen Victoria's reign also helped shape the modern world in other ways. During this time, new systems of education developed and many new workers' rights were introduced.
