Voyage to America!

β›΅ The Mayflower and the Pilgrims

The Mayflower was a famous ship that sailed from England to North America in 1620. On board were a group of people known as the Pilgrims, who were looking for a new place where they could live and practise their religion freely.

Today, the story of the Mayflower is an important part of the history of the United States.

The Ship!

🚒 What Was the Mayflower?

The Mayflower was a wooden sailing ship about 30 metres (100 feet) long. It was not originally built to carry passengers. It usually transported goods like wine and cloth across the sea.

In September 1620, the ship left England carrying 102 passengers and a crew of sailors. The journey across the Atlantic Ocean took about two months.

Life on the ship was crowded and uncomfortable. People slept in small spaces, the weather was rough and many passengers became seasick.

The Settlers!

πŸ‘€ Who Were the Pilgrims?

The Pilgrims were a group of English religious settlers. Many of them belonged to a group called the English Separatists. They believed the Church of England should be changed and wanted to worship in their own way.

At the time, the king of England was James I, and people were expected to follow the official church. Because the Pilgrims wanted religious freedom, they faced problems and felt unsafe in England.

Before sailing on the Mayflower, some of them moved to the Leiden in the Netherlands, where there was more religious freedom. After several years, they decided to travel to America to start a new community.

Across the Ocean!

🌊 The Journey of the Mayflower

The Mayflower sailed across the Atlantic Ocean for about 66 days. Storms pushed the ship off course, and instead of reaching their planned destination, the passengers landed in what is now Massachusetts in North America.

Before leaving the ship, the leaders wrote an agreement called the Mayflower Compact. This document said the settlers would make decisions together and follow fair laws.

New Beginnings!

🏘️ Starting a New Colony

The Pilgrims eventually built a settlement called Plymouth Colony. The first winter was very difficult, and many settlers became sick because of the cold and lack of food.

Local Wampanoag people helped the Pilgrims learn how to grow crops and survive in their new land.

Important History!

🌟 Why the Mayflower Is Important

The voyage of the Mayflower is remembered because it helped start one of the first English colonies in North America. The Pilgrims' search for religious freedom and their journey across the ocean became an important story in American history.
