Explore the Planets, Moons and Wonders of Space

Our Solar System!

🌍☀️ The Solar System for Kids

The Solar System for kids is the group of planets, moons, and other objects that travel around our star, the Sun. It formed about 4.6 billion years ago and is held together by the Sun's powerful gravity.

At the centre of the Solar System, the Sun provides light and heat, making life on Earth possible. Everything in the Solar System, including planets and smaller objects, orbits (moves around) the Sun.

Eight Planets!

🪐 What Are the Planets?

There are eight planets in the Solar System. In order from the Sun, they are:

The Eight Planets

  • ☿️Mercury – the smallest and closest to the Sun
  • 🌟Venus – the hottest planet
  • 🌍Earth – our home planet
  • 🔴Mars – known as the "red planet"
  • 🟠Jupiter – the largest planet
  • 🪐Saturn – famous for its rings
  • 🧊Uranus – an icy planet that spins on its side
  • 🌀Neptune – a cold, windy planet far from the Sun

The first four planets are rocky planets, while the outer planets are gas giants or ice giants made mostly of gases and ice.

Moons, Asteroids & More!

☄️ Other Objects in the Solar System

The Solar System is not just made of planets. It also includes:

What Else Is in the Solar System

  • 🌑Moons – natural satellites that orbit planets
  • 🪨Asteroids – rocky objects, mostly found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter
  • ☄️Comets – icy objects that form bright tails when they travel near the Sun
  • 🔵Dwarf planets – such as Pluto

These objects all move through space, following paths controlled by gravity.

Space Science!

🔭 Why Is the Solar System Important?

Learning about the Solar System for kids helps us understand how our planet fits into space. It teaches us about planets, gravity and how the universe works.

Scientists study the Solar System using telescopes, satellites and space missions to learn more about how it formed and whether life might exist elsewhere.
