The Romans invented many important things. One of their most famous inventions was the aqueduct. Aqueducts were huge systems that carried fresh water into cities for drinking, bathing and sanitation.
Around 100 BC, the Romans also developed the first concrete, which they used to build strong structures like aqueducts. They even created an early welfare system by giving free bread to poor people in Rome.

📅 The Julian Calendar
In the 40s BC, Julius Caesar introduced a new calendar called the Julian Calendar. This calendar was used all across Europe until the sixteenth century.

They invented a type of central heating called a hypocaust system. In this system, hot air from a furnace would heat a space beneath the floor to warm the rooms above. It worked in a similar way to modern central heating.

However, the greatest invention of the Roman Empire was the road. The Romans were the first civilisation to build a large network of straight paved roads thousands of years ago. These roads were designed for fast travel.
Because their roads were so well built, people could travel between Rome and Paris just as quickly as Europeans could as recently as two hundred years ago. It was not until the invention of trains and cars that people were able to travel faster than the Romans. For this reason, Roman roads are often considered their greatest invention.
