The Terracotta Army is a huge collection of life-sized clay statues of soldiers, horses and chariots. These statues were buried underground to protect the tomb of the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang.

Archaeologists believe there are over 8,000 soldiers in the Terracotta Army. Each statue was carefully made to look like a real soldier from Ancient China.

The Terracotta Army was built more than 2,200 years ago during the time of the Qin Dynasty.

Emperor Qin Shi Huang ordered the statues to be created as part of his enormous tomb. He believed the army would guard him and serve him in the afterlife.

Thousands of workers spent many years building the statues and the underground tomb complex.
