The Great Wall of China is one of the most famous structures in the world. It stretches across northern China and was built many hundreds of years ago to help protect the country from invasions.
Today, it is one of the greatest historical landmarks on Earth and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Learning about the Great Wall of China for kids helps us understand how ancient civilisations defended their land and organised huge building projects.
The first sections of the wall were built more than 2,000 years ago. It was built in many stages. The earliest fortifications were built as early as the seventh century BCE, but it was around 200 BCE when these fortifications started to be joined together to form a wall.
When Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a united China, came to power in 221 BCE, he ordered many of these smaller walls to be joined together. This created the early version of what later became the Great Wall of China.
The wall helped soldiers watch for attacks and slow down invading armies, especially groups of nomadic horse riders from the northern steppes.
The Great Wall of China was not built all at once. Different Chinese dynasties repaired, extended and rebuilt it over many centuries.
Early parts of the wall were made from earth, wood and stones. Later, during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), builders used stronger materials such as bricks and stone. This is the part of the wall that many people see today.
Thousands of workers helped build the wall, including soldiers, farmers and labourers. The work was difficult and sometimes dangerous because the wall crosses mountains, deserts and valleys.
The entire wall system, including branches and sections, stretches for more than 21,000 kilometres (about 13,000 miles) across northern China.
It runs through many regions, from deserts in the west to mountains near the Beijing in the east.
Watchtowers were built along the wall so guards could send signals using smoke during the day or fires at night if enemies were approaching.
Today, the Great Wall of China is one of the most visited historic sites in the world. Millions of people travel to China each year to walk along parts of the wall and learn about its long history.
It is often listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, showing how important it is as a symbol of Chinese history and culture.
