A Lasting Legacy!

β›ͺ Henry's Legacy

One of the most important events of Henry VIII's reign was his decision to break away from the Roman Catholic Church. When the Pope refused to allow Henry to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, Henry decided to separate England from the authority of the Pope in Rome.

In 1534, a law was passed that made Henry the Supreme Head of the Church of England. This meant that the king, not the Pope, was now the leader of the church in England. This major change began a period of religious change and conflict in England that lasted for many years.
